Special Educational Needs

This school asserts that all pupils will be involved in the process of learning and be provided with appropriate opportunities to achieve their potential. Students with Special Educational Needs will not be excluded from this process and enjoy equal opportunities with respect to access and delivery of a curriculum which is relevant and has breadth.

Following the publication of the Revised Code of Practice (January 2002) the requirement to hold a Register of Special Educational Needs has been withdrawn. However, we continue to identify and monitor students to ensure progress is being made. Students with Special Educational Needs are identified by:

  • Information received from the Local Education Authority (pupils with statements).
  • Information received from partner schools, including Key Stage 2 Standard Attainment Test results, Literacy, Numeracy and cross-curricular scores.
  • In-school assessments on entry, including Cognitive Ability Tests.
  • On-going in-school assessments (formal and informal).

Students with Statements of Special Educational Needs will have a carefully planned programme of support, monitored by their Individual Educational Plan, and an Annual Review of the statement. Other students identified at School Action and School Action Plus may have individual or group plans. Support a student receives will vary according to need, and may include the allocation of a Teaching Assistant in class (students with a statement and/or a Named Pupil Allowance) withdrawal from subject area/s to focus on specific skills, or adaptation of teaching materials (differentiation).

The Special Educational Needs Governors are Mrs Sarah Stancliffe and Mrs Iris Evans. Mrs Debbie Bennett, SENCO, is responsible for the day-to-day running of Special Educational Needs provision. Any questions or complaints relating to Special Educational Needs should be forwarded to the school for the attention of either Mrs Stancliffe, Mrs Evans or Mrs Bennett.
